Step 1: Prerequisites

a) You should have a running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Server.

b) You should have sudo or root access to run privileged commands.

c) You should have apt or apt-get utility available in your Server.

 

Step 2: Update Your Server

Before proceeding with the steps to install Gawk in your system, it would be wise to first update and upgrade all the installed packages to the latest version by using sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade command as shown below.

Step 3: Install Gawk

In the next step, you can install gawk utility from default Ubuntu repo by using sudo apt install gawk command as you can see below. This will download and install the package along with all its dependencies.

Step 4: Check Version

After successful installation, you can check the installed version of gawk by using gawk --version command as shown below.

Step 5: Using Gawk

Now that you have gawk installed in your system, it is time to test the utility. You can simply query your /etc/passwd file and display the first column based on colon(:) field separator(-F) using gawk -F ":" '{print $1}' /etc/passwd command as shown below.

Step 6: Check all the Available Options

If you are looking to check all the options available with gawk command then you need to use gawk --help command as shown below.
